A connected river edge
Riverine firefly environments can include water, muddy banks, riparian vegetation, dark night conditions and nearby terrestrial habitat. The importance of each component varies by species and place.
Habitat features worth recording
Riverbanks
The interface between land and water; bank form and disturbance should be documented rather than assumed.
Vegetation
Bần and other display vegetation may host visible adults, but the observed tree is not automatically the whole habitat.
Darkness
Artificial light can mask or interfere with bioluminescent signals in studied fireflies.
Moisture
Humidity and wet habitat are relevant regional context. A Ben Tre causal relationship has not been established.
Nipa palms
Nipa shapes many local waterways, but no claim is made here that it is required by the monitored population.
Human activity
Lighting, bank alteration, noise and boat traffic are variables to record, not ready-made explanations.
Artificial light: evidence and restraint
Studies show artificial light can affect nocturnal insects and firefly communication. Thuần remembers fireflies once being more widespread on land and wonders whether increased lighting is involved; the cause remains unproven.
